As An Educator
Blakeley Angelle White is an internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographer, educator, director and author. Her creative life spans performance and creation in Historical Modern and Contemporary Dance Theater, site-specific improvisations and interactive digital-video mapping as both a visual and movement artist.
Born and raised in South Louisiana, Blakeley White has a lifetime of experience researching and learning about inequities of access in educational systems and the importance of affordable education for all. With 26 yearsof experience as an educator in conservatories, universities and research institutions, she is ardently committed to creating entry points to public higher education for learners of all abilities, ages and backgrounds.
White is a SUNY Empire Alumna (2006) and holds her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College, Vermont (2013). Both of her degrees were earned while working and touring internationally with the world famous Martha Graham Dance Company where she held the title of Principal Dancer for 17 seasons and served as a Union Delegate. As a current Rehearsal Director for the Martha Graham Dance Company, she is responsible for maintaining the integrity of Historical repertory as well as contemporary commissions, and for staging dances on institutions globally.
White’s former students are now working as professionals in their chosen field as dancers, managers, administrators, choreographers and educators themselves in institutions such as the Martha Graham Dance Company, Alvin Ailey II, Hamilton, Netflix, Lincoln Center Education and many more.
She is committed to providing access to dance and dance education for all abilities, ages and backgrounds. As such, she has been an Arnhold Appointed Teacher on faculty at La Guardia High School where she developed student curriculum and professional development for teachers. She is also a founding faculty of the Middle School Arts Bootcamp (a partnership between Lincoln Center Education and NYC Department of Education) which is now in its eleventh season helping Middle School aged children prepare for High School Arts Auditions.
White has been an Adjunct Professor on Faculty at CUNY’s Hunter College Department of Dance since 2018 teaching BA Undergraduate students, MA and MFA Graduate students (founding faculty) developing hybrid courses which serve student needs, and is a teacher in the Ailey/Fordham BFA and Professional Division.
As a commissioned artist herself, White creates and performs her own original dance works, and mentors others through Choreographic Workshops in universities nationwide. Her research has been supported through the U.S. State Department Fulbright Specialist Program, where she was awarded a choreographic commission in Queretaro, Mexico. Her culminating piece, a collaboration with Colombian choreographer Daniel Fetecua and Mexican Composer Juan José Bárcena, was presented in the Presidential Palace, Los Pinos, in Mexico City. This partnership was realized via C. A.V. E. S. Project/entre el cuerpo y la naturaleza, co-founded by White McGuire and Fetecua Soto. C. A.V. E. S. is an interdisciplinary dance-theater laboratory that explores the intersections of equity, embodiment, art, and their intersection(s) with the Natural World.
White has presented her scholarship in conferences both domestically and internationally including: Women in Dance Leadership Conference, New York University; The Arts in Society Conference; Gestures That Matter, The American University in Paris, France; Traces and Transmissions: Rendering Dance. Dance Studies Association, The Ohio State University, and Think Human Festival: Dancing Human Rights, Oxford Brookes University Oxford, England (Keynote Performer.)
White’s research focuses on Revisionism through the solo form in Dance and Performance Art, specifically within the canon of Modern Dance. She authored her first book, The Martha Graham Dance Company: House of the Pelvic Truth (Bloomsbury Publishing/Methuen Drama), which explores the enduring legacies of technique and repertory through interviews with contemporary artists.
White lives in New York City, NY. She is an active member of the dance community, where she serves on advisory boards and as a mentor to dancers of all interests. She is an avid traveler, Nature lover, writer and is always looking forward to meeting new friends.
